Wondering what the risks look like every time you get on the road? While the risks are different for everyone, depending on factors like age, experience, time of day and much more, it is worth noting that Louisiana sees a traffic death rate of 16.2 people for every 100,000 people living in the state.
That number comes from 2017, as reported by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
The statistics show that Louisiana is, therefore, more dangerous than average. At the national level, the United States saw just 11.4 traffic fatalities for every 100,000 people in 2017. Roughly five more people die, per capita, in Louisiana. That’s a substantial difference that you must be aware of.
That said, Louisiana is not the most dangerous state. Over in Alabama, the rate was 19.4 deaths for every 100,000 people. Arkansas had a rate of 16.4 deaths for every 100,000 people, just a tick higher than Louisiana. In Mississippi, the rate was a staggering 23.1 deaths for every 100,000 people. Wyoming also broke the 20 barrier, with 21.2 deaths per 100,000 people.
Some of the safest states are Rhode Island (7.8), New York (5.0), New Jersey (6.9) and Massachusetts (5.1). On the whole, the east coast tends to have far fewer traffic deaths per 100,000 people, while the rates in southern states tend to be abnormally high.
