Any number of factors can lead to the accidents that happen on Louisiana roadways. In most investigations, officials want to determine what went wrong to cause these car crashes. Not only might this information be necessary in order to obtain a conviction in a criminal case, but it might also help determine whether changes need to be made to ensure that something similar does not happen again.
What might be one of the most perplexing wrecks is one in which a vehicle ends up traveling the wrong way on a divided interstate. The main question nearly everyone asks is how the vehicle ended up on the wrong side of the highway. Even though the reasons are important, it is the outcome with which most people are concerned since people will most likely be injured or killed in such an accident.
Two people died in a wrong-way accident on Interstate 20 near Shreveport on a recent Thursday night. It was about 10 p.m. when an eastbound vehicle was unable to get out of the way of a westbound vehicle headed right toward it. The unsuspecting victim, a 32-year-old man, was the only occupant of his vehicle. Sadly, he died at the scene. The 25-year-old wrong-way driver initially survived the crash, but died later at the hospital.
Despite the fact that no criminal charges are possible in this accident, Louisiana officials continue to investigate. As part of that task, toxicology samples were taken for testing to see if impairment was a factor in the wreck. Any information gathered could be used as evidence of negligence in a wrongful death claim filed against the estate of the wrong-way driver. As is the case in other car crashes, any monetary restitution received could defray the financial losses that often accompany tragedies.
