Impairment suspected in deadly car accident

| Dec 22, 2015 | Car Accidents

When a Louisiana driver gets behind the wheel after drinking, the outcome can be deadly. Being impaired causes drivers to make mistakes that put the lives of everyone in or near the road in danger. Any car accident that occurs involving a drunk driver has the potential to be catastrophic.

The devastation that occurs in an accident involving a drunk driver was recently illustrated by a crash involving two passenger vehicles and an 18-wheeler. The driver of one of the passenger vehicles was heading south in the northbound lane of Interstate 49, approaching Louisiana Highway 169. From the opposite direction, the other passenger car and the big rig were also approaching.

The southbound vehicle crashed into the northbound passenger car. During the impact, the big rig — which was behind the second car — hit the second passenger car and pushed it into a ditch. The drivers of both passenger cars perished in the crash, along with a passenger in the second car who was the son of that vehicle’s driver.

The other passenger in that car was the wife of its driver. She survived the crash and remained in serious condition at last report. The driver of the truck was fortunate enough not to suffer any injuries. Police believe that the wrong-way driver was intoxicated at the time of the crash.

The widow who survived the crash lost her husband and son. While she deals with the aftermath of this tragic car accident, officials will confirm whether the allegedly responsible driver was impaired. If so, that fact can be used as evidence of negligence in any lawsuit filed by the widow. Proving negligence to the court could result in an award of damages to help with the financial burdens thrust upon this woman by the allegedly drunk driver.
