Hit-and-run car accident leaves bicycle rider dead

The Baton Rouge Police Department is asking the public for its help in locating a vehicle believed to be responsible for the death of a bicycle rider. The vehicle involved in the car accident was last seen in the 6900 block of Airline Highway. Reports indicate that the car is a green or blue older model Pontiac with large wheels.

The hit-and-run car accident occurred on May 24, 2015, at approximately 7:30 p.m. Investigators believe the vehicle responsible for the accident will most likely have damage to the windshield, the bumper on the front passenger side and the hood. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers or Traffic Homicide Investigators.

The bicycle rider was crossing Airline Highway when the car for which the Baton Rouge Police Department is searching hit him. For some reason, the driver failed to remain at the scene and render aide to the victim. When emergency responders got to the bicyclist, the 49-year-old man was still alive. He was rushed to a hospital in the area, but despite the effort of both emergency medical personnel and medical staff at the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.

It could take some time for police to locate the vehicle and the individual who was driving it the day of the car accident. When that person is located, the family of the victim may file a wrongful death claim against him or her seeking restitution for the damages they incurred, and are incurring, as a result of the victim's death. Proving that the death of their loved one was due to the negligence of another is required before the court will consider an award of damages. Any monetary judgment received because of a successfully litigated claim could help relieve the financial impact of this accident.
