As many Louisiana motorists may already be aware, everyday driving can lead to unexpected situations. In the late evening hours of Nov. 10, a pickup truck ran into the back of a semi-truck that was stalled on Interstate 59 and caught fire. This car accident immediately took the life of the pickup driver.
While Louisiana State Police continue their investigation, the cause of the deadly accident is clear. The big rig truck had driven over a mattress that was in the middle of the road. In doing so, the mattress got caught in the vital lines and hoses under the truck, causing the fuel and electrical lines to be torn. According to authorities, the truck had no choice but to stop in the middle of the right lane due to stalling out from the torn lines.
With no lights visible due to the damaged electrical system on the truck and no way to move out of the lane, the pickup truck could not see the semi until it was too late. The driver slammed into the rear of the truck's trailer and burst into flames. The pickup truck driver died at the scene. There was no report on whether the semi-truck driver sustained any injuries. Due to this deadly crash, the northbound lanes were closed for hours as police conducted an investigation and the scene was cleaned up.
This deadly car accident was unfortunate, but the family of the deceased truck driver has options to consider while dealing with their tragic loss. The family may file a wrongful death claim against the driver of the semi-truck as well as the company for which he works. Any damages that may be awarded could cover expenses such as funeral and burial costs associated with the sudden death of their family member.
