When drivers fail to obey stop signs, serious accidents can occur

Most Louisiana drivers would agree that it can be annoying to have to stop at every red light and stop sign on the way to their destinations. Even so, most people obey them because the consequences associated with the alternative could be deadly. That is because when drivers fail to obey traffic signals and signs, serious accidents can occur.

Many of Louisiana's highways have stop signs and traffic signals on them as well, such as the intersection of Louisiana Highways 133 and 15. This intersection was recently the site of a crash involving two vehicles. Sometime prior to 3:30 p.m., a car was on LA 133 headed north, and a pickup truck was on LA 15 headed east.

As the two vehicles approached the intersection of the two highways, the driver of the northbound vehicle failed to obey the stop sign for an as yet unknown reason. The pickup truck was already proceeding through the intersection and was unable to avoid colliding with the car. The 26-year-old driver and 45-year-old passenger in the northbound car suffered fatal injuries to which they succumbed at the scene. No information was provided regarding the injuries, if any, that were suffered by the 45-year-old man driving the pickup truck.

While officials continue to investigate the accident, the family of the deceased passenger and the pickup truck driver could exercise their rights to file civil actions against the estate of the deceased driver. Establishing negligence through the presentation of appropriate evidence could result in an award of damages typically seen in serious accidents. Any monetary restitution received could help with the financial burdens that often arise in the aftermath of an accident.
