Louisiana car accident leaves 2 dead, 1 injured

Louisiana motorists know there is no shortage of news stories and other information regarding the dangers of drinking and driving. An alarming number of people are injured or killed as a result of alcohol-related car accidents every year. In fact, alcohol is suspected to be the cause of two deaths and another person's injuries in a recent single car accident.

According to the Louisiana State Police, a Dodge pickup truck swerved off the southbound lane of La. 29 and hit a power pole, which caused the vehicle to roll over. The 42-year-old driver and a 50-year-old passenger suffered fatal injuries. Authorities pronounced the two men dead at the scene. Another passenger, a 55-year-old woman, survived the wreck.

Emergency responders transported her to a local hospital to be treated for moderate injuries. Her current condition is unknown. Since Louisiana State Police believe alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash and standard procedure dictates it in the case of a fatal accident, a toxicology sample was taken from the driver. The results are pending, and the investigation is ongoing.

The family of the deceased passenger surely grieves for the loss of their loved one. Even as they do so, they retain the right to file a wrongful death claim against the estate of the deceased driver and any separate owner of the vehicle he was operating. Further, the injured passenger is entitled to file a personal injury claim as well. As is the case with similar fatal car accidents, no restitution ordered by a court can change the events of that day, but successful civil claims may at least provide some financial relief for the losses sustained due to this tragic car accident.
